Google Android on other Devices Soon ... I'm sure

maniacalrage:

One of the smartest things Apple has done with the iPhone platform is release a non-iPhone device that has the same OS/capabilities—the iPod touch. If you’re not interested in buying an iPhone, in switching to Cingular, in all of that, you can still build and thoroughly test iPhone web apps and native apps by purchasing a cheap iPod touch.

This is not the case with Google’s Android platform. Currently, the only way to play with an Android device is to buy a T-Mobile G1, and sign up for a T-Mobile account. There’s no way for a non-T-Mobile user to buy a cheaper device or an unlocked G1 to build applications, test web apps, etc. This is a huge mistake on Google’s part, and one which I hope they rectify.

Android’s code is open source and available so you can put it on whatever device you want. People have loaded onto several Sharp devices and the Nokia 810. Pretty much any device with an ARMv5TE processor can run it, and this probably was not the version available to handset makers. I’m sure others have/will compile/d Android to run on other processor architectures soon. Not to mention the fact that you could download the SDK and run the simulator for months.

How Many of Me

There is 1 person with my name in the U.S.A.
How many have your name?

That’s not right considering that I’m a Junior, but my parents probably didn’t fill the census questionairre out. On the other hand maybe my wife’s right about me getting a middle name to differentiate me from my dad for credit and reputation purposes.

I’ve been saying this for years. We’ll be exploring landfills soon after they’re no longer viable for producing methane gas. Meanwhile, states that refused to bury, and opted to dump their garbage elsewhere will be kicking themselves - hard. Such “exhausted” landfills will be packed with little more than inorganic waste, like easily harvested metals. Point at anything on the periodic table and it’ll exist in a landfill at concentrations far higher than what exists in ore deposits we’re mining today; so this will be ridiculously profitable. Add to that the fact that they’re all close to home, and you have yourself an industry that does a brisk business in mining landfills. And since all the stinky stuff has long since decomposed, you only have heavy-metals and toxic runoff to worry about (read: just like a normal mine). After that, companies will look to cut out the middle man and buy back everyone’s e-waste after the recycling plant has sorted it out. So the landfill will dissapear, leaving a closed loop from the recovery of raw materials all the way to the consumer and back again. -

I’ve always thought something like that should happen, something in there has to be useful.

awais: This haiku by John Maeda pretty much sums up why I chose to study design. Athough I’ve changed my career path now, I still like to draw and create. I just wish I had more time for it.   I feel this haiku so much, sometimes the pressure of novel scientific discovery placed on my work by being in computer science Ph.D. program gets in the way just making new things whether it’s science or not. Some of the new things I want to make ain’t science, maybe it’s engineering. I just hope this wager of the last 5 years of my life will pay off with freedom to study, make, and think all my time, money, and energy will allow.
